- Arne O. Haavisto Jr., age 72, of Niagara, passed away on Wednesday,
December 9, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, from a sudden cardiac
arrest that he experienced while at home.
Arne was born February
3, 1948, in Munising, son of the late Arne O. Sr. and Aune (Maki)
Haavisto. He grew up in Eben, Michigan, and was a graduate of Eben High
School, class of 1966. He excelled in basketball, winning numerous
awards on the Eben High School team. On August 4, 1973, he was united in
marriage to Mary Beth Hohol at St. Anthony Church in Niagara. They
resided in Green Bay for a year and a half while Mary Beth completed her
nursing degree. In 1974, they moved back to Niagara. Mary Beth preceded
him in death on May 18, 2015.
Arne worked as a carpenter for
Northern RV in Quinnesec before retiring. He also served on the Niagara
Rescue Squad, was a founding member of the Tri County Horse Association,
and served until his passing as the Town of Niagara Zoning
Administrator. Arne was also passionate about the Niagara Historical
Society, volunteering countless hours building that dream to a reality.
Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Amy (Brian) Kind of Waunakee,
Wisconsin, and two grandchildren, George and Madeline.
In
addition to his parents and wife, Mary Beth, Arne was preceded in death
by one brother Ronald A. (Geraldine) Haavisto, and one sister, Phyllis
Gibbs.
A memorial service will be announced in the spring. Burial
will take place in Niagara Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the
family has established a memorial fund in Arne's name with all proceeds
to be donated to the Niagara Historical Society. Please send donations
