schedule of events for the month of October
(Thursday - September 30, 2021) - "TeenTober" is celebrated at libraries
across the nation each October as a way to reach out to teen patrons.
Each week, the library will feature an activity or program related to a
different teen service area: literacy, writing, technology, and the
Monday, October 4: Teen Subscription Box Pickup for grades 9 through 12. These boxes contain a handpicked library book as well as treats to enjoy while you read. Return the box and library book once you have finished reading; the treats are yours to keep. At this time, boxes are limited to the first five registrants; please visit the Main Branch and fill out an information sheet to register.
Monday, October 11: DIY Smash Book Kit Pickup for grades 9 through 12. Smash books are a fun way to blend a scrapbook and journal without a lot of planning. These kits include a discarded book, washi tape, stickers, ribbon, scrapbook paper, gesso, a sponge brush, and directions. Kits are available at all branches; simply call your local branch to reserve one or just stop in and ask at the circulation desk.
Monday, October 18 from 6:30-7:30 PM at the Main Branch: College Prep with Learning Express for grades 9 through 12. Learning Express is a free online resource to prepare for the ACT, PSAT, SAT, and college placement tests. Library staff will provide one-on-one help in setting up an account and trying out the programs. Call the Main Branch at 906-774-1218 to register and schedule a time slot.
Monday, October 25: Ping Pong Jack-o-Lantern Kit Pickup for grades 9 through 12. Using ping pong balls, tea lights, and paint, teens can make their own miniature luminary Jack-o-Lantern, complete with a spooky flickering flame effect. Kits are available at all branches; call your local branch to reserve one or just stop in and ask at the circulation desk.
-- Kids ages 8 through 13 are encouraged to participate in the Trap the Bat STEM Challenge in October. Kits are available for pickup at any library branch starting Monday, October 4. These include a paper bat you can color, as well as toothpicks and marshmallows to construct a “trap.” E-mail a photo of your creation to email@example.com by Monday, October 18 and it will be posted to the library’s Facebook page for public voting. The entrant whose photo gets the most “likes” will win a prize!
-- Storytime sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, October 5 and Tuesday, October 19 at 10:30 AM at the Main Branch;Thursday, October 7 at 10:30 AM at the Solomonson Branch; and Thursday, October 21 at 10:30 AM at the North Dickinson Branch.
Kids age birth-5 will enjoy stories, songs, and other early literacy-building activities. To celebrate Halloween, costumes are encouraged at all storytimes this month! Registration is required; please call your local branch to sign up. Storytimes can be streamed on Zoom for interested patrons; please call 906-774-1218 to inquire or check the events calendar on our website, www.dcl-lib.org, for more information.
--Know Prevention—No Fire is on Saturday, October 9 from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Main Branch. Fire Prevention Week is October 3 through 9 and we've invited the Iron Mountain Fire Department and Breitung Township Fire Department to the library to talk about fire safety. They'll also have the fire safety house and a fire engine on display! For all ages.
-- The Friends of the Library Book Sale makes its long-awaited return October 15 through November 4 during library hours at the Main Branch. Find fantastic deals on books, audiobooks, DVDs, VHS tapes, magazines, and more! The event begins with a preview sale open to Friends of the Library members on Thursday, October 14 from 5-7 PM and the annual Friends of the Library meeting at 7 PM. New Friends of the Library members are encouraged to join at the door for $5. The sale opens to everyone on Friday, October 15.
